Natural Resources Canada, Earth Sciences Information Centre
The Earth Sciences Information Centre (ESIC) is Canada's national earth sciences library and has Canada's largest collection of books, journals, maps, and photos in the earth sciences, in print and electronic formats. It is mandated to provide information services in support of the research and information needs of the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada, other government departments, universities, industry, and business. All of ESIC's services are available in both French and English.
GEOSCAN provides complete bibliographic, geographic, and subject metadata for approximately 50,000 records covering the publications of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS). It also includes purchase information, as well as online and free download links. Contributions by GSC and CCRS staff to external publications have been included since 1986.
Spatial searching has recently been added to GEOSCAN, to allow users to search the records by latitude and longitude, either alone or in combination with all existing search options. There is no fee for searching GEOSCAN.
The ESS Photo Database contains more than 5,800 digitized photographs selected from the Photo Collection of the Geological Survey of Canada, which houses over 520,000 photographs, slides, negatives, and glass plates dating from 1842 to the present. The selection has been made from both history and modern photographs relating to surveys and studies carried out by the GSC. Digitization of selected photographs is an ongoing project.
