Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, U.S. Geological Survey

The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center is one of 16 science centers in the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey. Its mission is to develop research information on the quantitative ecological requirements for sustainable wildlife populations, to design and conduct studies of numbers and distribution of flora and fauna, including identification of changes resulting from habitat loss and modification, and to disseminate the latest in technical information and research findings such that interested audiences benefit to the maximum extent possible.

The Library staff uses the STAR/Libraries integrated library system to manage its collection. Over the years they have customized that application and added several databases that reflect their own organization's needs.

While the collections have been Internet-accessible for several years, the Library staff has recently revamped their STAR Web sessions to implement STAR's capabilities for searching across collections, in addition to searching on the individual collections. They have also implemented STARFastlinks (smart hypertext search links) to dynamically tap the latest information on acquisitions and new staff publications from outside of STAR.

The NPWRC Library catalog contains more than 14,000 MARC records for print and electronic resources held by the library.

NPWRC Publications Database -- records for more than 1,600 publications authored by NPWRC staff including links to our online information products.

NPWRC Bibliographies -- 25,000 citations from various bibliographies available on the NPWRC website.

NPWRC Journals Finder -- a tool that can also be used to search or browse both print and electronic serials holdings.
